The VMA's

Just in case you missed it (because you are sans cable like me -- oh how I miss you, sweet, sweet channel lineup!), MTV has announced the nominations for the 2006 Video Music Awards. Video of the year nominations go to Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Panic! At The Disco, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Shakira. You can watch the videos online and vote yourself.

The awards will be aired the evening of Thursday, August 31st. This would be a great opportunity to host a viewing party @ your library.*

Oh, and HAPPY 25TH BIRTHDAY, MTV!

I enjoy your web log.
I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to raise questions like this but here goes:

Should we be encouraging media events like the MTV movie awards or MTV in general? Maybe it's just my personal vendetta against the network, but I can't approve of what they are doing to music today. At the same time MTV is so much a part of teen culture that it is nearly impossible to get away from it.

Those are just a few thoughts. Let me know if questions like this are welcome on Amplified Librarian. If so, anyone feel free to respond with your thoughts.

Yes! Questions/comments are always appreciated and welcome.

You bring up an interesting point... Of course, I'd be much happier encouraging librarians to promote "rare vinyl" nights and "discuss your favorite Smiths' song" workshops, but I think that libraries should err on the side of popularity. The bottom line is that MTV awards shows, as well as the Oscars, Grammies, etc., are big media events and therefore appeal to a broad spectrum of people. If you can get a bunch of teens into the library to watch MTV, then you can get them interested in other programming and maybe (gasp!) books.

But that's just my opinion. Feel free to pipe in, everybody else!

P.S.S. - In the meantime I thought that a cool idea, if you are hosting a viewing, is to recommend other artists (preferably good ones) that are similar to the artists that are nominated. You could reference similar artists at allmusic.com

A dialogue could go something like this:
Teen: I think Panic at the Disco is the danciest music in the universe.

Librarian: Is that true? If so, perhaps you should consider the band The Rapture. Their rythmic beats and groovy base lines will dance you to the moon.

Teen: ...I still like Panic at the Disco.

We can try can't we?

I love Panic at the Disco!!!!

A lead who sounds, at least, like he has formal training. Interesting lyrics . . . They change up their tempo for heaven's sake.

I get what you mean, though. It would also be a good opportunity to show them Pandora (i.e. how hip librarians are to the wonders of info tech.)

And by 'love' I mean - can respect in light of many of the top-40 alternatives. Ahem, of course.
